Photo: Marina City stars in panoramic image of Chicago River Marina City was caught on a sunny day in late May by professional large-format photographer Greg Murphey. With 35 East Wacker on the left, the image also shows off Wacker Drive, Chicago River, 330 North Wabash, Trump International Hotel & Tower, and Hotel 71. Murphey captured the image mid-day from the roof of Hotel Monaco on behalf of a client he declined to disclose. Three vertical sections were combined to produce the panoramic. “The timing of each section is crucial,” he says, “as one must account for the shifts of the sun, anticipating the timing and movements of the sun’s position throughout the window of the light on the entire scene. Therefore, when matching the sections, little or no work is necessary to blend the sections in the most natural looking manner.” Murphey photographed the emerging punk scene in New York for a year in the 1970s before returning to Chicago to work at Hedrich Blessing, considered to be the world’s premier architectural photography company.
