14-Oct-23 – Special cameras that can detect loud, modified mufflers – and vehicles without mufflers – would be installed downtown under an ordinance co-sponsored by six aldermen, including 2nd Ward Alderman Brian Hopkins and 42nd Ward Alderman Brendan Reilly.

The Vehicle Noise Reduction Pilot Program, if approved by the Chicago City Council, would permit the city to obtain the cameras and install them in an area bounded by North Avenue, Lake Michigan, Interstate 55, and Ashland Avenue.

The cameras, similar to speed cameras, would detect motorcycles and other vehicles with modified or removed exhaust systems, and automatically issue citations to violators.

According to sponsors of the ordinance, the World Health Organization says noise is the second-worst environmental cause of health problems, just after air pollution.

“This ordinance recognizes that loud mufflers are not mere inconveniences but are detrimental to the health and well-being of our residents,” said Hopkins (left), who is chairman of the City Council’s Committee on Public Safety.

Also sponsoring the ordinance are 3rd Ward Alderman Pat Dowell, 11th Ward Alderman Nicole Lee, 34th Ward Alderman William Conway, and 43rd Ward Alderman Timmy Knudsen.
