Marina City on London newspaper ‘top ten’ list
17-Apr-11 – An architecture critic for the U.K.’s Observer, the oldest newspaper in the world, has named Marina City one of the “ten best tall buildings.” In Sunday’s web version of The Observer, Rowan Moore says the two towers of Marina City “look like things of nature.” “Early skyscrapers expressed fantasy through encrustations of ornament, gothic, art deco, classical, Babylonian, Mayan – whatever the architect fancied,” writes Moore. “Next came the cool glass box favoured by modernist architects. Marina City, a development mostly of flats completed in the 1960s, rediscovered fantasy through the medium of endlessly repeated petals of curved concrete.” Moore put Marina City at number three on his list. Other buildings he favours include New York’s Chrysler Building, Pirelli Tower in Milan, Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, and CCTV in Beijing. |
