‘Floating gym’ will find the fittest on the river

12-Dec-15 – On the last day that Nike’s “floating gym” will be docked on the Chicago River west of Wabash, a three-hour workout session will select the fittest of the fit. 48 people, from all over the continent, chosen from “weather defying” photos and videos submitted through social media, will compete in the Nike Get Out Here Challenge. Only two, a man and a woman, will be selected to move on to another Nike challenge next year.

“Each athlete exudes the grit and passion needed to conquer the outdoors in the winter months,” says Nike.

The almost-open-air gym, built on a barge and floated to the Riverwalk earlier in the week, has offered free trainer-led workouts to the public, 16 times a day since Wednesday. Nike also took over space along the Riverwalk that was used most recently by The Hideout. Additional space on the Riverwalk west of State Street was used as offices and to store gear during the event.

Saturday schedule…

  • 6:15 a.m. – Nike+ Training Club (high intensity internal training)
  • 8:00 a.m. – Train Chicago (cross training)
  • 8:36 a.m. – Nike+ Run Club Long Run (choose 4 or 10 miles)
  • 10:30 a.m. – Swoosh Saturday (athletes ages 6-12) training experience
  • 4:00 p.m. – Get Out Here Challenge with 48 finalists from across North America
