Lines rigged across river to rescue dumpster

Photo by Keith Pearson 8-Jan-15 – Oh, the glamorous life of a marine salvage company.

A dumpster, owned by Groot Industries, had itself been dumped into the Chicago River about two weeks ago. It floated helplessly across from Wolf Point, near railroad tracks on the west bank, nowhere near a spot where a truck could maneuver to retrieve it.

On Tuesday, Chicago Marine Towing rigged a line to the dumpster and dragged it north until it was directly across the river from River North Point, formerly known as 350 West Mart Center.

From the west side of River North Point, a line was stretched across the river to the dumpster – a smaller line first, used to get a bigger line across.

Captains Keith Pearson, recovery engineer and salvage master, and Albert Bartkus of Chicago Marine Towing, caught these images. Said Bartkus about Pearson, “He usually dives in a dry suit to rig our projects and…the joke here is that he didn’t have to go ‘dumpster diving.’”
