4-Apr-17 – A woman was struck and killed by a Red Line train in River North on Monday. The incident happened at about 2 p.m. at the State & Grand station. The woman was hit by a northbound train.
For nearly two hours, Red Line trains in both directions were stopped as Chicago Fire Department worked to reach the victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Based on witness statements, CFD believes it was a suicide, according to a spokesperson. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office identified the woman as 49-year-old Ann Fritzsche.
A second ambulance was requested for the train operator who was “distraught.”
Above ground, traffic was blocked between State and Hubbard. By 4 p.m., Red Line trains were moving but bypassing the stop at State & Grand. Service has since been completely restored.
