Serving the Loop and Near North neighborhoods of downtown Chicago
August dates in Marina City history

August 1961 – Concrete is poured for the 40th floor of the east tower core. Meanwhile, Charles Swibel negotiates a 25-year lease of the 16-story spiral parking garages for $200,000 per year.

August 1962 – A group of bankers announce plans for Marina City Bank. It will be started with $2 million in capital.

August 30, 1962 – Rosemary Toner files a lawsuit against Marina City owners over the death of her husband, James, in a construction accident the previous year. During the same month, a city ordinance takes effect, permitting use of temporary passenger elevators in high-rise apartment buildings during construction. Intended to discourage use of material hoists to transport workers, it is a response to the accident that killed Toner and six other men.

August 30, 1962 – The first fire at Marina City is quickly extinguished as wooden crates burn on the 45th floor of the west tower.

Bob Gibson August 14, 1969 – Bob Gibson (1931-1996), a folk singer who lived at Marina City in the late 1960s, is arrested in his 45th floor apartment, charged with drug possession.

August 4, 1977 – Residents of Marina City start to receive a letter from the property management company informing them that the rental property is converting to condominiums.

August 28, 1981 – 73-year-old Mary Foley walks across the State Street Bridge despite alarms and barricades that suggest the bridge is being raised. She falls toward a gap in the bridge but is caught by a Chicago police officer.

August 16, 2007 – Glenn Jeffers of the Chicago Tribune describes the recently renovated Hotel Sax as “a stylish, urban-chic hotel in one of Chicago’s most envious locations.”
